40% Pakistanis claim to have a favorable opinion of Pope Francis – higher than Bangladesh, Iran and Turkey; lower than India.

WIN Gallup International conducted a global opinion poll in 64 countries across the globe about the image of Pope Francis. Surveys in Pakistan were conducted by Gallup Pakistan according to which 40% Pakistanis claim to have a favorable opinion of Pope Francis and 24% claim to have an unfavorable opinion.

A nationally representative sample of men and women from across the four provinces was asked, “Irrespective of your own religion, do you have a very favorable, somewhat favorable, somewhat unfavorable or very unfavorable opinion of Pope Francis?” In response to this question, 40% said that they held a favorable opinion of Pope Francis while 24% held an unfavorable opinion and 36% did not respond.

Pakistan’s results are less positive than global results according to which 54% of the world’s population has a favorable opinion of Pope Francis against 12% that has an unfavorable opinion and 34% who do not know how to evaluate the Pope.

Within Asia, Pakistan has indicated a more favorable opinion of Pope Francis compared to Bangladesh, Iran and Turkey. In Bangladesh, 20% of the population has given a favorable opinion of the Pope while 13% have given an unfavorable opinion; in Iran, 10% of the population has given a favourable opinion while 8% has given an unfavorable opinion; and in Turkey, 13% of the population has given a favorable opinion while 26% have given an unfavorable opinion. On the other hand, Pakistanis have shown a less favourable opinion of Pope Francis compared to Indians. In India, 59% of the population has given a favorable opinion of Pope Francis while 7% has given an unfavorable opinion.
