According to a Gilani Research Foundation Survey carried out by Gallup Pakistan 56% say they have heard or read about Oscar award to Pakistani filmmaker Sharmeen Chinoy. Most of them said the news made them either very happy (40%) or happy (41%). 19% said they had mixed or no special feelings.

A nationally representative sample of men and women from across the four provinces was asked “Recently, Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy, a Pakistani woman has been awarded an Oscar for her documentary ‘Saving face’. Have you heard or read anything about it?” Responding to this 56% claim that they have read or heard about it whereas 44% claim to have no information about it.

Question: “Recently, Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy, a Pakistani woman has been awarded an Oscar for her documentary ‘Saving face’. Have you heard or read anything about it?”

In a follow up question, the respondents were asked “What were your feelings when you read or heard about it?” Responding to this 40% claim that they were very happy about it, 41% claim to be happy whereas 13% claimed to have mixed feelings about it. However 6% claim that they had no feelings at all.

The study was released by Gilani foundation and carried out by Gallup Pakistan, the Pakistani affiliate of Gallup International. The recent survey was carried out among a sample of 2703 men and women in rural and urban areas of all four provinces of the country, during March 04 – March 10, 2012. Error margin is estimated to be approximately ± 2-3 per cent at 95% confidence level.
