According to a Gilani Research Foundation Survey carried out by Gallup Pakistan among those who celebrate New Year favorite celebrations are exchange of greetings (40%), visiting friends and relatives (23%), cooking special foods (18%) and praying (12%).

A nationally representative sample of men and women from across the four provinces was asked “How do you celebrate new year?” Responding to this 40% claim that they only send greetings for New Year, 23% claim to meet friends and family, 18% claim that they celebrate by cooking their favorite food, 12% claim that they pray whereas 6% like to light their houses. However 4% did not give a view.

(Note: This was a multiple response question so the percentage sum may exceed 100.)

In a follow up question, the respondents were asked “Some people stay awake on night of 31st December to wait for the next day while some people do not. Do you wait for the new day?” Responding to this 26% claim that they stay awake on night of 31st December to wait for the new day whereas 74% claim that they do not wait for new day.

The study was released by Gilani foundation and carried out by Gallup Pakistan, the Pakistani affiliate of Gallup International. The recent survey was carried out among a sample of 2723 men and women in rural and urban areas of all four provinces of the country, during January 01 – January 07, 2012. Error margin is estimated to be approximately ± 2-3 per cent at 95% confidence level.
