Divided views on sighting of moon and date of Eid: Majority (63%) favors the decision to celebrate Eid after local sighting; others (30%) support following the date of Eid in Mecca: GILANI POLL/GALLUP PAKISTAN

The results of a Gilani Research Foundation Survey carried out by Gallup Pakistan revealed that majority (63%) of Pakistanis favor the decision to celebrate Eid according to local sighting of the moon, while 30% of the Pakistanis support following the date of Eid in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.

In a survey a nationally representative sample of men and women from across the four provinces were asked the following question: “Some people believe that Eid should be celebrated according to the sighting of moon in Mecca, Saudi Arabia while others believe it should be celebrated according to the local sighting of the moon. What is your view point?” Majority (63%) of the respondents held the opinion that Eid should be celebrated according to the local sighting of the moon. However 30% of the respondents were of the view that Eid should be celebrated according to the sighting of the moon in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. 7% respondents said they did not know and/or chose not to respond.
“Some people believe that Eid should be celebrated according to the sighting of moon in Mecca, Saudi Arabia while others believe it should be celebrated according to the local sighting of the moon. What is your view point?”

The study was released by Gilani foundation and carried out by Gallup Pakistan, the Pakistani affiliate of Gallup International. The recent survey was carried out among a sample of 2692 men and women in rural and urban areas of all four provinces of the country, during August 28-September 3, 2011. Error margin is estimated to be approximately + 2-3 per cent at 95% confidence level.
