According to a Gilani Research Foundation Survey carried out by Gallup Pakistan, views in the country are divided but majority favors 3 Provinces: 50% of all Pakistanis are favorable, 35% are opposed, 15% are uncertain. In Punjab itself the Ruralities are majority favorable (48%:34%), while the Urbanites are majority opposed (32%:45%).

A nationally representative sample of men and women from across the four provinces was asked “Recently, legislation was presented and passed in the Punjab Assembly about creating new provinces of Bhawalpur and Southern Punjab. Are you in favor or against this decision?” Responding to this, 50% claim that they are in favor of this legislation, 35% claim to oppose it whereas 15% did not give a view.

Further analysis shows that the views in Punjab vary between its Rural and Urban sections. Among the Ruralities a majority is favorable as 48% favor, 34% opposes and 18% are uncertain. Among the Urbanites a majority is opposed as only 32% favor while a larger number, 45% are opposed and 23% are uncertain.

Question: “Recently, legislation was presented and passed in the Punjab Assembly about creating new provinces of Bhawalpur and Southern Punjab. Are you in favor or against this decision?”

The study was released by Gilani foundation and carried out by Gallup Pakistan, the Pakistani affiliate of Gallup International. The recent survey was carried out among a sample of 2644 men and women in rural and urban areas of all four provinces of the country, during May 13 – May 19, 2012. Error margin is estimated to be approximately ± 2-3 per cent at 95% confidence level.
